Internship Overview

Agencies

Agencies that hire interns receive inexpensive expertise and unabashed enthusiasm in writing plans and proposals, locating potential funding sources, research and other grant-related assistance.  Interns are supervised by experienced grant writers.  So, in essence, agencies get both energetic interns and experienced grant getters in one package!

Interns are hired for 75 hours.  In that time, interns can perform grant-related tasks identified by the agency and faculty supervisor, such as:

  • Assessing agency needs and wish list for funding

  • Research potential funders whose funding priorities match the agency's mission and needs:

    • Corporations

    • Foundations

    • Government

    • Individuals

  • Creating funding strategies that will increase grant success rate

  • Writing "mock" or "real" grant proposals

  • Prioritizing funding needs

  • Assessing and making recommendations to improve agency's "funding readiness"

  • And, more!

Upon the completion of a successful 75-hour internships, agencies can hire an intern for additional work ... in 75-hour increments.

Cost:     $2,250 per 75 hour internship

Interns

Internships with 4Grants.net are designed to provide “hands-on” training for eligible individuals interested in applying knowledge and skills of grant writing and management to real, on-the-job situations. To be considered for internships, interested individuals must

  1. Have completed Grant Writing Basics and Finding Funders courses, and

  2. Be enrolled as a student in the fundraising/grants certification program.

It is helpful, but not required, to have a hiring agency in mind, although many agencies contact the Grants Academy directly requesting interns.

Many interns already work for agencies and use the internship process to support their efforts and deepen their skill development.

Internships are great ways to gain valuable grant writing or management experience, while getting paid and earning credit towards receiving their grant writing certification.  Credit is earned on the basis of 75 hours of internship for the equivalent of one college-credit.

How an Internship Works

Each intern develops a personalized contract with an agency supervisor and faculty advisor.  This contract outlines key outcomes/deliverables and time lines for 75 hours.  Interns meet regularly with faculty advisors and other interns to discuss experiences, problems and strategies to increase success.

For the paid intern, internships provide a decent hourly rate ($15-20+/hour based on his or her documented success rate), while offering valuable work experience and mentorship with an experience grant writer.  Tuition for the internship experience is included in the cost paid by the agency.
